Role of ICT in the Transformation of Gender Relations: Prospects and Limitations by Dr. Aramanzan Madanda, Social Scientist/Gender Specialist, Makerere University, Uganda
Synopsis
Based on a presentation drawn from research conducted in Uganda, the workshop will explore prospects
and limits of using ICT to transform gender relations and enhance women’s empowerment. An opportunity shall also be provided to highlight the most important aspects
that need to be addressed if the enormous potential of ICT is to be harnessed for gender equality.
About Your Facilitator
Dr. Madanda holds PhD, a Masters of Arts in Women Studies, a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Education (Economics and History) of
Makerere University, Uganda. Dr. Madanda’s PhD thesis in Women and Gender Studies is titled: Gender Relations and Adoption of ICT in Contemporary Uganda: A Case of
Computers and Mobile Phones. The thesis was completed on a sandwich programme hosted by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and Makerere University, Uganda and
principally supported by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). He has extensive research skills using quantitative and qualitative methods as well as project
coordination experience. He is a member of the advisory boards of one International Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) and two national NGOs. He is Chair of a board of one secondary school in Uganda and is a founder member of one fast growing secondary school in Uganda. He has various publications in gender, food security, governance, and technology and society.
He is also the Information and Communication Technology Programme Coordinator at the SWGS where he heads a programme that prepares especially women for ICT careers. Madanda has experience with youth work in Uganda. In 2009 he prepared a report “Uganda Youth Initiative: Country Mapping Report” for the Open Society Institute, New York. In 2010 he was Co-Evaluator, of the Youth Action Fund in Uganda, which was again commissioned by the Open Society Institute, New York.
